Corey Stapleton (R) was the Montana Secretary of State from 2017-2021. He officially announced his candidacy for the 2024 presidential election on November 11, 2022.[3] He filed with the Federal Election Commission on October 6, 2022.[4]
Before serving as Montana secretary of state, Stapleton was a member of the Montana State Senate from 2001 to 2007
Biography
Stapleton was born in Seattle, Washington in 1967. He grew up in Great Falls, Montana, after his family moved there in 1969.[10] After graduating from Great Falls High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he attended nuclear power school. He was appointed to the Naval Academy and graduated with a degree in engineering in 1992. He received a master's degree in political science from Temple University in 1995.
He returned to Montana in 1997 and began a career as a financial advisor.[11] He also served as president of the Montana School for the Deaf and Blind Foundation.[11]
Stapleton's political career began in 2000 when he was elected to the Montana State Senate. He won re-election in 2004 and in 2005 was elected Chairman of the Legislative Campaign Committee. During his final year in the legislature in 2007, he served as Minority Leader.[11] Stapleton was elected Montana Secretary of State on November 8, 2016. He was sworn into office on January 2, 2017, and served through the end of his term. In 2022, Stapleton began making country music, releasing two albums under the name Corey Stapleton & The Pretty Pirates.[12]
